Incentives, Exhaustion, and Capacity Drift

Yesterday, we named something simple:
Exhaustion has become normal.
Today, we ask a harder question:
Why?
This is where Richard Feynman enters the room.
Feynman had a simple habit:
When something didn’t make sense, he didn’t blame the people inside the system.
He studied the system.
He once said, “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself — and you are the easiest person to fool.”
So instead of assuming we’re weak, fragile, or unmotivated, let’s look at the structure.
Because systems shape behavior.
What Systems Actually Reward
If you want to understand a culture, don’t listen to what it says.
Watch what it rewards.
Promotions go to the always-available.
Praise goes to the tireless.
Respect goes to the high-output.
Security goes to those who have adapted…no matter the cost.
Rest rarely gets rewarded.
Boundaries are often negotiated.
Slowing down is framed as risk.
Even in subtle ways, busyness becomes currency.
And humans adapt to incentives.
Not because we’re sheep.
Not because we lack character.
Because adaptation is intelligence.
How Normalization Happens
There’s a sociological term called Normalization of Deviance.
It describes what happens when abnormal conditions persist long enough without immediate catastrophe. Gradually, the abnormal becomes acceptable. Then it becomes standard.
It happened at NASA before the Challenger disaster.
It happens in organizations.
It happens in families.
It happens in cultures.
And it happens with exhaustion.
When chronic stress doesn’t immediately collapse the system, we reinterpret it as “just how things are.”
And once something is standard, we stop questioning it.
Capacity Drift
This is where I want to introduce a term that builds on yesterday.
I call it Capacity Drift.
Capacity Drift is what happens when chronic exhaustion slowly reduces your available physical, emotional, and cognitive bandwidth — and you adapt to that reduction without realizing how much you’ve lost.
You don’t crash.
You recalibrate.
Your baseline shifts.
You require more stimulation to feel alert.
More effort to focus.
More willpower to engage.
More caffeine to function.
More recovery to feel almost normal.
But because the shift is gradual, you don’t experience it as loss.
You experience it as life.
That’s drift.
Not collapse.
Not failure.
Drift.
And drift erodes hope quietly.
Because hope — the kind we’re talking about — requires capacity.
It requires enough nervous-system bandwidth to imagine alternatives, pursue goals, and tolerate uncertainty.
When capacity shrinks, imagination narrows.
“What if this could be different?” becomes “This is just how it is.”
That’s not pessimism.
That’s depletion.
Incentives Accelerate Drift
Here’s the structural part.
When a system rewards output over regulation…
When it praises endurance over sustainability…
When it equates worth with productivity…
Capacity Drift accelerates.
Because the behaviors that reduce capacity are the same behaviors that earn security and status.
That’s not evil.
It’s incentive architecture.
And humans respond to incentives.
Feynman understood this intuitively. During the Challenger investigation, he refused to gloss over evidence because institutional incentives were distorting perception.
People weren’t malicious.
They were embedded.
We are too.
Why This Matters for Hope
Hope is not optimism.
Hope is inspiring goals plus agency plus pathways.
But agency requires capacity.
If your nervous system is depleted, if your bandwidth is narrow, if your energy is chronically low, the future looks smaller.
Not because you’re cynical.
Because you’re tired.
That distinction matters.
A Question to Sit With
Not to fix.
Not to optimize.
Just to notice.
Where in your life has capacity drifted so gradually that you no longer remember what “well-resourced” felt like?
No judgment.
Just awareness.
Because once drift is visible, it can slow.
And slowing drift is the beginning of restoring capacity.
Tomorrow, we soften this.
Because behind drift is often performance.
And behind performance is vulnerability.
